2015 – 2016 Racing History

It’s a Racing History exhibit for 2015!

This year marks the 90th anniversary of the Tahoe Yacht Club, formed in 1925 “to promote sociability, power boating and other aquatic sports and good sportsmanship on Lake Tahoe, ”  and one of the original organizations to formally sponsor boat racing on the Lake. In honor of this event, TMM’s new exhibit, set to open over Memorial Day weekend, will feature the history of racing on Tahoe.

TMM Archival Collection 2011.21.3 J. Phillip Murphy’s unlimited hydroplane, Breathless, shown running on Lake Tahoe, flew the Tahoe Yacht Club Burgee on her tail fin. Breathless won the 1955 Mapes Trophy and TYC Championship races. Image donated by Jay Murphy.

Over the years there have been both powered and non-powered racing events, so we’ll feature everything from canoes and sailboats to unlimited hydroplanes. We’ll highlight the individuals – racers and owners to boat designers and mechanics – who influenced the competition and even took Tahoe boats to national and international races.

Contact Us…If you have a memory, photograph, trophy, racing suit, or anything else from the amateur and professional races of the past, please consider sharing it with us at info@tahoemaritime.org.  We’re not only looking for donations, but also loaned objects that we can use for a short time that will help us fully interpret the history of boat racing on Lake Tahoe.

** Opening night reception will be held: Friday, May 22, 2015. Further details will be posted on our events page shortly.
